NASA discovers planet eight times bigger than Earth

NASA has been keeping an eye on a previously unseen planet within its own solar system, one that is eight times the size of our home planet Earth.

The exoplanet, known as GJ 1214 b, was first discovered in 2009 by the Hubble Space Telescope, and experts have now obtained new information about its composition thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope.

GJ 1214 b has been classified as a sub-Neptune due to its size—a term used for planets smaller than Neptune but larger than Earth in size.

This type of planet, with its distinctive composition, is only discovered outside of our solar system.

'GJ 1214b has been the long-sought goal of our research into exoplanet atmospheres,' says Laura Kreidberg, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, 'How wonderful it is to finally uncover its secrets!
