Greenland Is Ready to Cooperate With Trump, Premier Says

(Hey NEWS) -- Greenland's prime minister stated that he intends to foster a closer relationship with the US, citing Greenland's pursuit of independence, fueled by renewed interest from Donald Trump.

to local broadcaster KNR.

We have the doors open when it comes to mining," he said. "This will continue to be the case in the years to come. We also need to trade with the US.

His goal is to take control of Greenland, a self-governing territory of Denmark with a population of 57,000 people. The island is rich in natural resources, including gold, diamonds, uranium, and rare earth metals found in electronic devices. It's also projected to play a significant role in future global shipping routes.

A bill aimed at reacquiring the Panama Canal has also been put forward, and currently has 16 supporters.

Thousands of bills are introduced in the US Congress every year, but the vast majority fail to move forward through the legislative process. At the same time, both Egede and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen have made it clear on multiple occasions that Greenland is not for sale and that its future is up to the Greenlandic people to decide.

Egede has recently intensified his calls for loosening Greenland's ties with Denmark, suggesting a possible referendum on independence could be held in the upcoming election period. Greenland is scheduled to hold a general election by April, during which the topic of independence and the future of Greenland's relations with Denmark is expected to be a major focus.

For a potential secession to happen, it would need approval from Denmark's parliament. However, Denmark's ruling coalition has said it will respect any decision made by Nuuk.

The Danish Prime Minister restated Denmark's interest in Greenland ahead of a NATO summit, scheduled in Helsinki on Tuesday, expressing a desire for closer cooperation with the United States in the region.

“We've had a very strong and close partnership when it comes to the Arctic region and defense in Greenland and the surrounding area,” Frederiksen said. “We'd also like to take that partnership to the next level.”

The renewed focus on Greenland has given the territory more influence in its relationship with Denmark, placing the world's largest island in an unexpected position of strength.

"Now, the situation is that other countries have taken notice of what we're saying here in Greenland," he said at the news gathering on Monday.
